Santander, October 2026.
AVANCEM Engineering, an advanced engineering company belonging to MADEMAN GROUP, consolidates its experience in large international scientific facilities through its participation in component manufacturing projects for the European Spallation Source (ESS), located in Lund (Sweden).
The company has completed supplies of mechanical components for chopper systems in different ESS scientific instruments, including references associated with ODIN, HEIMDAL and BEER.
This work, carried out during 2024 and 2025, forms part of AVANCEM’s track record in manufacturing engineering, precision machining, metal assembly fabrication, dimensional inspection and quality assurance for demanding scientific facilities.
ESS: one of Europe’s major neutron research infrastructures
The European Spallation Source is an international scientific infrastructure based on a high-power linear proton accelerator, designed to generate neutron beams through a spallation process.
The neutrons produced are used in specialised scientific instruments to study the structure, properties and behaviour of materials, with applications in physics, chemistry, energy, life sciences and engineering.
Its technological complexity means that ESS requires a wide variety of mechanical components, vacuum systems, precision equipment and industrial solutions manufactured under demanding quality and traceability procedures.
Precision components for chopper systems
Among the work carried out by AVANCEM, the manufacture of components for chopper systems in scientific instruments stands out.
Choppers are devices that select and modulate neutron beams in time using rotating elements, contributing to the operation of experimental instruments.
AVANCEM has been involved in supplying mechanical housings and enclosures for these systems, including:
- ODIN and HEIMDAL: manufacture of top housings and base plates for T0 Chopper systems.
- BEER and HEIMDAL: manufacture of eight main aluminium housings for neutron instrument chopper systems.
These components require high dimensional accuracy, compatibility with the equipment’s mechanical interfaces, appropriate material selection and compliance with the technical and documentation requirements established for integration into the facility.
Manufacture, inspection and validation
The projects carried out for ESS have required coordination between different industrial capabilities within AVANCEM and MADEMAN GROUP.
The work has included metal component fabrication, machining operations, assembly, dimensional inspection, quality control and the preparation of technical documentation.
The supply of components for T0 Chopper systems also involved the corresponding verification activities and factory acceptance tests (FAT) before delivery.
This type of contract highlights the importance of integrating manufacturing engineering and industrial capability to produce components for highly complex scientific equipment.
International experience in accelerators and large scientific facilities
Participation in ESS is a significant reference in AVANCEM’s track record as a component supplier for international scientific infrastructures.
This experience is complemented by projects for other facilities such as ALBA Synchrotron and by the contracts secured during 2026 with ITER Organization, expanding the company’s presence in technologies associated with particle accelerators, neutron sources and fusion energy.
As part of MADEMAN GROUP, AVANCEM combines specialised engineering capabilities with an industrial structure of approximately 10,000 m², encompassing metal fabrication, machining, welding, assembly and quality control.
The projects carried out for European Spallation Source reflect AVANCEM’s ability to manufacture and validate high-precision mechanical components for some of Europe’s most advanced scientific facilities.
