AVANCEM and MADEMAN GROUP develop support and transport systems for CERN’s new magnets

The project, carried out for the High-Luminosity LHC upgrade, comprised the design and manufacture of one storage system and two transport systems for superconducting magnets 18 metres long.

One of the most representative references in AVANCEM and MADEMAN GROUP’s experience in large scientific facilities is the work carried out for CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, as part of the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) project.

In 2024, we undertook the design and manufacture of one storage system and two transport systems for the new magnets, approximately 18 metres long, associated with the upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

This project is an example of our ability to combine mechanical engineering, the design of special structures and industrial manufacturing in equipment for scientific facilities with the highest requirements.

Engineering for large components

Superconducting magnets are essential elements in the operation of large particle accelerators. Handling, storing and transporting them requires mechanical solutions adapted to their dimensions, characteristics and safety conditions.

The work carried out for CERN included the design and manufacture of structures to support these components and facilitate their transport and handling.

The nature of the project required the integration of requirements for mechanical strength, stability, geometry and compatibility with the facility’s handling equipment and procedures.

From design to manufacture

One of the main characteristics of this work was the connection between engineering and MADEMAN GROUP’s industrial manufacturing resources.

The group’s experience in metal structures, machining, welding and assembly enabled the production of mechanical solutions specifically designed for the project’s needs.

This ability to address both technical development and industrial execution is one of the main distinguishing features of our working model.

A track record linked to CERN

This project forms part of our experience in the CERN environment, which also includes earlier component manufacturing work for the LHC.

These references help consolidate our capabilities in engineering and manufacturing components for large scientific facilities and particle accelerators.

Today, this experience is complemented by new projects for ITER Organization, European Spallation Source and ALBA Synchrotron.

Our participation in the HL-LHC project reflects one of AVANCEM and MADEMAN GROUP’s main strengths: transforming complex engineering requirements into manufactured industrial solutions for demanding scientific applications.
