Vacuum subsystem for the ATHENA cryostat

Design and manufacture of the vacuum subsystem for the ground calibration cryostat of the ATHENA project

Vacuum subsystem for the ground calibration cryostat of ATHENA, the European space observatory dedicated to high-energy X-ray observation.

Description

The project.

The calibration cryostat reaches minimum temperatures of the order of 4 K and internal pressures down to 10⁻⁷ mbar. Avancem integrated the coupling elements, the vacuum instrumentation and the pumping components required to sustain those conditions throughout the calibration campaigns.

Technical scope

  • Bellows coupling to the cryostat
  • Vacuum interfaces and instrumentation
  • Turbomolecular pump integration
  • Gate valve and UHV chamber
